SRO Tenants Regain Chinatown Homes

(from CAAAVOn November 13, 2008, over 50 tenants were forced out of their homes and told to go to a homeless shelter because their landlord did not correct safety violations that had already been cited by the City’s Department of Buildings. After more than nine months living in the temporary shelter, the long-time residents of 81 Bowery returned to their hones in early September.

Charges against Bronx Southeast Asians Dismissed

Over the course of this year, there has been increasing police harassment of Southeast Asian residents in Devoe Park, a public space on University Avenue and Fordham Road in the Bronx. Between July and August, over 20 Southeast Asian residents were targeted and were arrested or given meritless summons on allegations that they were loitering or gambling in the park. For some residents who were arrested, they were held for several nights without access to translation, phone calls or food. For others, their money was confiscated and not returned when they were released.

KIWA Battles Church Expansion

Korean Immigrant Workers Alliance (KIWA) is battling a local church, Oriental Mission Church (OMC) that is destroying housing for a parkling lot. In early September, the church sent out a public hearing notice to area residents that they are applying for a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) to turn almost an entire block of Residential (R3-1) zoned land into a lot for the church.

Immigrant Groups File Lawsuit To Stop Sunset Park Rezoning In Brooklyn

Brooklyn, NY—Two long-time Sunset Park residents, five local churches and a community group, Chinese Staff and Workers' Association (CSWA), have filed a lawsuit in New York State Supreme Court challenging the Department of City Planning’s (DCP) proposed rezoning of 128 blocks in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. They claim that the rezoning plan will encourage more luxury development and large chain stores, resulting in widespread residential and commercial displacement and gentrification among Sunset Park´s low-income Asian and Latino communities.
