Immigrant Notes: "Take Our Jobs" and New Mainstream Pro-Immigrant Coalition

The United Farm Workers have initiated a "Take Our Jobs" campaign, promising to train unemployed Americans to take agricultural field jobs. There's an on-line application. Stephen Colbert is piling on by featuring it on his July 8th show. California's agriculture industry launched a similar campaign in 1998 and three people showed up.

Student Vigil Forces Retraction of Anti-Immigrant Provisions

A two week long 24-hour immigrant student vigil led Massachusetts state legislative bodies to moderate anti-immigrant amendments attached to a State budget draft. The legislature's conference committee removed measures to create a hotline reporting on undocumented immigrants and the denial of in-state tuition rates at public colleges and universities to undocumented sutdents. The state Senate had attached the measures.

The Good, the Bad and the Curious about Asian American Unemployment

A recent study from the Economic Policy Institute pointed out the unusual position of Asian Americans in the current recession, While a large portion of Asian Americans have bachelor’s and advanced degrees, a larger share of Asian American workers than whites lack high school diplomas.

However, Asian Americans with bachelor’s degrees and advanced degrees  have a higher unemployment rate than whites with equivalent educational attainment. On the other hand, Asian American high school dropouts, are more successful than white dropouts at finding employment.

Two Hundred Call for Arizona Boycott at Fenway

API Movement and AARW, along with a number of other organizations threw up a 200 strong picket line outside Fenway Park before a Red Sox- Arizona Diamond Backs game on June 15th. The informational picket called for Major League Baseball (MLB) to remove the All Star game from Arizona next year in light of their newly oppressive laws against immigrants, particularly SB1070. 30% of MLB players are Latino and the MLB Players Union- who are agaiinst the AZ Law.
